Flunixin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has analgesic and antipyretic properties. It is a nicotinic acid derivative and is employed in veterinary medicine in the form of Flunixin meglumine, used for the alleviation of inflammation and pain. Flunixin is rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration in horses, and parenteral administration to cattle and pigs. The elimination half-life is approximately 3-4 hrs in cattle and horses, however it can be easily detected for up to 48hours in serum. Flunixin is a prohibited class A drug under the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI).
