Quinolones are a group of synthetic antimicrobials that inhibit the activity of bacterial DNA gyrase enzymes. The earliest members of this group of compounds are active against gram-negative bacteria.

The newer fluoroquinolone antibiotics, a fluorine-containing subclass of the quinolones, have been found to have enhanced antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria and they are also active against gram-positive bacteria.

The main application of quinolones is the treatment of infection, including, gastrointestinal and respiratory infections both in human and veterinary clinical practices. However, the presence of residues of these compounds in food producing animals has to be controlled as their widespread use can lead to the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. As a result maximum residue limits have been set for several quinolones depending on the animal species and matrices.
