The sulphonamides (ie. sulphamethoxazole) are competitive inhibitors of the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase in the folic acid metabolism cycle, which inhibit bacterial growth by preventing p-aminobenzoic acid incorporation into folic acid.

The sulphonamides have a bacteriostatic effect on a broad range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Sulphamethoxazole is metabolised to N4-acetyl sulphamethoxazole, the ratio of which varies with species, tissue, age and route of administration.

Sulphamethoxazole is extensively used in veterinary medicine for the prophylaxis and treatment of infectious diseases in fish and shrimp and as feed additives to promote growth in food producing animals. Honey has been found to be adulterated with antibiotics, which has led to import bans.
